SILF - Announcements
SILF Meeting - Monday, 17 July 2017, Hyatt Regency

Subject: SILF Meeting - Monday, 17 July 2017, Hyatt Regency
Dear Colleagues,

This seems to be true - any day you may expect an Announcement / Ordinance / Rules permitting Foreign Lawyers to set up their law practice in India.  It appears that there will be no further consultation with the legal profession. As you are aware SILF has been supporting a phased sequential opening of legal services sector to Foreign Lawyers but it seems that the doors are likely to be opened overnight.
That this development is likely to happen any day is further strengthened by the fact that the Chief Justice of India and another Senior Judge of the Supreme Court of India have openly declared their support for the entry of Foreign Lawyers into India – even without any conditions.  These observations were made two days ago at a Conference of ILA in New Delhi.  It is possible that the Chief Justice and the other Hon’ble Judge of the Supreme Court were not aware of the fact that the issue about entry of Foreign Lawyers is pending before the Supreme Court itself where interim orders have been passed by the Court permitting Foreign Lawyers only to visit India for advisory work on fly-in and fly-out basis.
In order to discuss the implications of the likely move on the part of the Government of India of suddenly and without prior intimation opening of the legal services sector to Foreign Lawyers an Emergent / Urgent meeting of members will be held on Monday, July 17, 2017 at 5.30 pm at the Senate Room (6th Floor), Hotel Hyatt Regency, New Delhi.
You are requested to attend this crucial meeting.
Best Regards,
President SILF
